Tuesday, September 9, 2014 Day No. 9

Woke Up: Garibaldi, OR   Went to Sleep: Off the coast of Alsea Bay, OR

11:00 am – Out to sea. Heading south. Water is flat as a pancake.

Pacific Ocean – Flat as a Pancake

The glassy ocean provides a perfect reflection of the clouds. Waiting for wind.

3:35 pm – Still waiting. To think I trusted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to tell me which direction the wind is blowing. I’m studying their web page as I write this. The web site says north/northeast 5 – 10 knots. I stare out over the handrail at a windless ocean. If there is any wind at all it is coming from the south! “The south, man! Don’t you know north from south?” I’ve lost all trust. Peter is confident the wind will pick up and swing around as dusk approaches.

Fine by me. I’m off at 4:00 pm. We’ve settled on four hour shifts. For four hours I’m “On deck”. During that time I have to stay in the cockpit, stay awake and pay attention to the sound and the motion of the boat. Every 2 – 3 minutes I have to stand up and scan the water in all directions for other ships or floating debris. In 25 minutes I am off work! Yippee! That means I can go below, get warm, take off my gloves, hat, lifejacket and take a nap.

It looks like the wind is indeed moving to the west. Soon Peter will set the sails for our first overnight passage.

We were glad for an update, I had a feeling it was due to no internet connection on the ocean…maybe a satellite internet? We (I) was worried we hadn’t heard from you in a while.. Just shared your update amongst the CAD Group..
