Two Weeks With Mom
For the past two weeks, my mom and I have been like Siamese twins 24/7. With my hand at her arm, I have guided her to sit, to stand, to walk, to get in and out of bed, to dress. After a brief illness, she needed a little help with almost everything. I slathered her dry skin with lotion, sprinkled talcum powder between her toes and worked up a sweat wrestling with those damn compression hose. I fetched coffee in the morning and placed a glass of water beside her bed before I hugged and kissed her good night.
I sobbed as the nurse asked simple questions intended to measure her diminished cognition. I’m perplexed with the design of this elegant and pathetic life plan laid out for each of us.
I didn’t feel guilt as I left my mom to sail to Mexico. I know she is in the capable hands of her caregivers and my siblings. I feel only immense gratitude for the precious time we had together.
